Questions about Cheryl's Tutorial
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:57:21 PM »
Cheryl - 1) When I open default.html in EW4, I don’t see any HTML code, but code does appear in the tutorial version (3:20). Does that mean I’ve already messed up? 2) In your tutorial at 3:30, you change default.htm to index.html for reasons associated with your webserver. Should I follow that guidance for every site I develop, or do I need to ask my webserver? What is a webserver?

1. Are you working in Split view or just Design View (look at the bottom of the workspace pane and you will see 3 view options: Design (default), Split (what I recommend) and Code (best used when working in serve side code that requires processing on the server so doesn't render in Design view anyway.)

2. You should use whatever it is your web server supports. You are on a Windows server so default.html is frequently the first in the default name list before index.html.

Cheryl - Thank you. I changed my view to Split, and will leave the name as default.html when I design websites. For the website I'm designing by following the tutorial, I'm doing exactly as you instruct! Bob

Once you've worked through creating the page with the tutorial you should have enough knowledge to create a site with your own layout-material. :)

Cheryl - Have other people gone through the tutorial? If so, did it take quite awhile? I made some mistake when I was following the first 15 minutes of the tutorial, so I decided to start again. I thought you might be interested to know that it took me one and one-half hours to finish 21 minutes of the tutorial. Granted, I am about as "newbie" as a "newbie" can get!
On a related note, I found that making the size of EW4 on my screen the same as your video was quite helpful.
Thank you very much for making this video. I'm learning a ton.

FWIW,

Congratulations on finishing your tutorial. I would no be concerned about having to start over (done that and will do it again)  or taking a long time to finish (It always takes me longer than I think it should).  Instead gauge your self on how you feel about what you have accomplished and the knowledge you have gained.  As you put on block of knowledge on top of another and with some practical work in between you will have built a solid foundation on the art of web design/development.

Keep up the good work

I have been through Cheryl's Tutorial once but it was so long ago and I now have EWv4 so I am going back through it again to get my web muscles back into some kind of shape.  Hopefully as good as when I was pretty good at FrontPage 2002.

Bob,

It usually takes beginners about 6 hours to work their way through the full tutorial even though the tutorial itself is only 90 minutes. Most folks pause and even rewind multiple times before finishing. Some with a little experience in web design go faster but even those who have a good understanding of how to create web pages, even if it is in another program like Dreamweaver rarely finish in less than 2 hours.
